Alessandro Costa Hurt After Toe Gets Caught in Octagon During Flyweight Bout
One of the flyweights at Noche UFC in San Antonio last weekend suffered a freak injury that forced his corner to throw in the towel.
American Alden Coria stepped in on short notice to make his Octagon debut against Brazil’s Alessandro Costa. Coria was ahead on all three judges’ scorecards after two rounds, but Costa’s hopes of a comeback were dashed when he appeared to injure his big toe in the second round. The injury worsened at the start of the third, and Costa’s corner ended the fight less than a minute in.
Gruesome footage, shared by MMA Junkie’s Danny Sergura, shows Costa’s toe caught painfully between the cage, an injury that is extremely rare but not unprecedented in UFC history. Fighters have occasionally suffered cage-related injuries, with toe injuries like Costa’s among the most unusual.
Despite the setback for Costa, his teammate Diego Lopes took home a victory in the main event, leaving Noche UFC with a mix of memorable performances and unfortunate injuries.
