Lerone Murphy has revealed that he briefly lost passion for MMA after learning he had been overlooked for the featherweight title fight at UFC 325. The undefeated contender believed his knockout win over Aaron Pico at UFC 319 had positioned him perfectly for a championship shot, or at least ahead of Diego Lopes — who recently lost a vacant title fight.
Instead, the UFC booked Alexander Volkanovski to defend his belt against Lopes, leaving both Murphy and fellow top contender Movsar Evloev on the outside looking in. Fans have criticized the decision, calling it unfair matchmaking that ignores merit.
Speaking with Ariel Helwani on Uncrowned, Murphy admitted the announcement hit him hard:
“When I first found out, I fell out of love with it [MMA] for a bit… I thought there were no politics. I thought it was simply: Do the work, the best fight the best. That’s what hurt me the most.”
Despite his frustration, Murphy says he’s shifting his focus back to his long-term goals. He acknowledges the business side of the sport and insists he will keep working until his opportunity can’t be denied.
“Just keep fighting, keep winning, and we’ll get there eventually. I think it’s inevitable… I’m going to be champion. My road’s never been easy from the get-go.”
Murphy and Evloev are now expected to fight each other — a matchup that could finally clarify the true next challenger in the featherweight division.
