Demetrious Johnson believes Arman Tsarukyan has the tools to defeat Ilia Topuria and claim lightweight supremacy. Despite not yet fighting for the UFC lightweight title, Tsarukyan is widely regarded as one of the division’s most complete athletes. His withdrawal from a scheduled bout with Islam Makhachev stalled his title ambitions, but Johnson says his talent remains undeniable.
After recently training with Tsarukyan, Johnson praised his athleticism, mindset and well-rounded skill set. He argued that Tsarukyan presents the toughest stylistic challenge for Topuria at 155lbs. Johnson added that Tsarukyan should have faced Justin Gaethje or Paddy Pimblett for interim gold and deserves a shot at the winner of Topuria versus Gaethje.
Topuria is expected to face Gaethje at the UFC White House event in June, but Johnson believes Tsarukyan offers the best chance to dethrone “El Matador.” Tsarukyan’s natural lightweight size and grappling strength could prove decisive. Meanwhile, the Armenian continues to stay active outside the UFC and will compete in wrestling at RAF 6 against Georgio Poullas on February 28.
