Eye Poke Forces Abrupt End to Title Clash

Tom Aspinall’s heavyweight title defense against Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 ended in controversy after an accidental eye poke stopped the bout in the first round. With less than a minute remaining, Gane’s fingers caught Aspinall in the eye, leaving the champion unable to continue. The referee ruled the fight a no-contest as Aspinall was escorted from the octagon for medical attention.

Sonnen Questions Aspinall’s Willingness to Continue

Following the event, Chael Sonnen criticized Aspinall’s decision not to continue, arguing that champions are expected to fight through adversity. “You’ve got to fight with one eye,” Sonnen said, insisting that competing while injured is part of a champion’s mindset. Fellow analyst Anthony Smith agreed, suggesting that fighters at the top level must be prepared for such moments.

Fans Defend Aspinall, Citing Severity of Injury

Supporters of the British heavyweight defended his choice, pointing to the visible damage and potential risk of worsening the injury. Ringside footage showed the eye poke’s severity, prompting many to argue that stopping the fight was the right call. UFC President Dana White has indicated that a rematch between Aspinall and Gane will likely take place once both fighters are medically cleared.
