With Weili Zhang giving up the UFC women’s strawweight title to challenge Valentina Shevchenko, Mackenzie Dern steps in as the new 115-pound champion. Dern secured the vacant belt with a decision win over Virna Jandiroba in the co-main event of UFC 321.
Early Rounds Show Fierce Grappling Battle
The first round stayed close as Jandiroba constantly pressured Dern with grappling. Dern used her jiu-jitsu expertise but also landed damaging strikes. The second round followed a similar pattern, with both fighters exchanging control and scoring points.
In the third round, Dern pressed Jandiroba against the fence and added striking to her attack. Despite multiple takedowns, Dern appeared more effective even from her back.
Dern Seizes Key Moments in Final Rounds
Jandiroba dominated most of the fourth round but ended it on her back. Dern used her striking in the fifth to secure the win. Judges scored the fight 48-47 twice and 49-46 once.
Fighters Bring Strong Momentum Into the Bout
Jandiroba entered on a five-fight win streak, claiming six victories in seven fights since her first match with Dern. Dern brought three wins in her last five, including a January victory over Amanda Lemos. UFC 321 now officially crowns her the new strawweight champion.
