Charles Oliveira is searching for a new opponent for his UFC Rio return after Rafael Fiziev withdrew due to injury. The former lightweight champion was set to fight in front of his home fans in Brazil for the first time in over five years on October 11, but Fiziev’s injury has thrown the main event into uncertainty.
Several lightweight contenders have expressed interest in stepping in. #8 ranked Mateusz Gamrot, Renato Moicano, and Benoit Saint-Denis have all indicated they are willing to face Oliveira on short notice. UFC matchmakers are reportedly working to secure a replacement and ensure Oliveira still headlines the event.
UFC flyweight champion Alexandre Pantoja recently suggested that Oliveira might benefit from moving up from lightweight, citing concerns over his weight cuts and vulnerability in the 155lb division. While Oliveira is expected to remain at lightweight for UFC Rio, Fiziev’s withdrawal could prompt him to reassess his future in the division.
