Social media star meets WBA lightweight champion in highly anticipated fight streamed live on Netflix
The announcement that Jake Paul will fight WBA lightweight champion Gervonta “Tank” Davis on Friday, Nov. 14, at State Farm Arena in Atlanta came as a surprise to many. Paul had recently been linked to a potential heavyweight showdown with former champion Anthony Joshua, while Davis was rumored to pursue a rematch with Lamont Roach Jr. following their majority draw in March. The two sides reached an agreement Wednesday for a fight currently labeled as an exhibition.
How the Fight Came Together
Paul first publicized a list of dream opponents in August 2021, when he was 3-0 in his boxing career, having defeated fellow YouTuber AnEsonGib, NBA Slam Dunk champion Nate Robinson, and MMA fighter Ben Askren. That list included Tyron Woodley, Canelo Alvarez, Nate or Nick Diaz, Kamaru Usman, Conor McGregor, Tommy Fury, Gervonta Davis, KSI, and his brother Logan Paul.
Since then, Paul has fought Woodley twice, Fury, and Nate Diaz. Davis will become the fourth notable opponent from that list. Both Paul and Davis have shown interest in fighting each other for years, trading challenges and jabs on social media. Earlier this year, negotiations were delayed after Davis’s March draw with Roach, but ultimately, he chose the larger payday against Paul over a rematch with Roach.
Why the Fight is Happening
Both fighters recognize the event’s cultural and financial significance. Paul has become a major draw in boxing, while Davis consistently sells tickets and pay-per-view. The fight is expected to attract a large global audience when streamed on Netflix. Since Mayweather’s crossover fight with Conor McGregor in 2017, the financial potential for high-profile, unconventional bouts has been clear.
Will This Be a “Real” Fight?
Although there is a substantial weight difference—Paul last fought at cruiserweight (200 pounds), while Davis is a 135-pound world champion—the fight will be real in terms of effort and intensity. However, it may not be a traditional sanctioned bout. Most Valuable Promotions co-founder Nakisa Bidarian noted that the exact weight and number of rounds have yet to be finalized. The Georgia State Athletic Commission will oversee the rules, and the weight gap could lead to the fight being officially designated an exhibition.
Exhibition Rules
Exhibition bouts differ from professional fights in several ways: round length and number, glove size, refereeing, and other rules are flexible. No official winner is declared, and the fight does not count toward a fighter’s professional record, making the matchup primarily for entertainment.
Comparison to Logan Paul vs. Floyd Mayweather
The Paul-Davis fight resembles Logan Paul’s 2021 bout with Mayweather, though Jake is more experienced than his brother, and Davis is in his prime, unlike the retired Mayweather at the time. Weight disparities will exist, but bad blood between Jake and Davis adds higher stakes, as a loss for either could affect future opportunities, including Paul’s potential heavyweight matchup with Anthony Joshua.
Impact on the Joshua Fight
While a Paul-Joshua fight is still being planned for 2026, a loss to Davis could change public perception and demand for that bout. Joshua is recovering from elbow surgery and may fight French heavyweight Tony Yoka later this year, but Paul remains confident. “First, I am going to kill Davis, then I will go on to slaughter Joshua,” Paul said in a statement.
What About the Davis-Roach Rematch?
The rematch between Davis and Lamont Roach Jr. is not canceled permanently but has been postponed. Roach is expected to fight a different opponent this fall, and the rematch could be reconsidered for early 2026 if both fighters remain undefeated in their next bouts.
Legal Matters
Davis had a misdemeanor battery charge stemming from an alleged domestic incident on Father’s Day, which was dismissed earlier this month.
