Tyson Fury has cut ties with his long-time trainer and plans to prepare for his ring return entirely on his own.
The two-time heavyweight champion regained his world title in 2020 under Sugarhill Steward, after Ben Davison got him fight-ready in 2018. For his latest major comeback, Fury insists he won’t employ a head coach.
He compares himself to Clubber Lang, the character from Rocky III, saying he will “train alone.” Fury has based his camp in Thailand, claiming the constant sunshine improves his mental health compared to the UK.
Fury faces Arslanbek Makhmudov in London
After months in Thailand training and spending time with family, Fury flew to London for a face-off with Arslanbek Makhmudov. Hundreds of journalists attended the media day featuring the two giants.
When asked about his training plans, Fury said he no longer needs a head coach following his split with Steward.
“I’m like Clubber Lang,” he said during the Netflix broadcast of the pre-fight press conference at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. “I’m going to train alone.”
Lennox Lewis noted Fury has vast experience from many camps, and Fury agreed.
Fury confident in his own knowledge
“I know how to go 12 rounds and push myself when necessary,” Fury said. “I also know when to rest.”
He added that boxing often gets treated like rocket science, but it comes down to training hard, eating well, and resting properly.
“For experienced fighters, you sometimes need reminders about certain techniques,” he explained. “But my own body, I know best now.”
Fury insists that his years in the sport give him the confidence to prepare independently and manage his comeback without external guidance.
