Garcia Delivers on the Big Stage
Ryan Garcia finally captured a world title on his third attempt, outclassing Mario Barrios to claim the WBC welterweight crown. Garcia set the tone early by dropping the Texan and remained in control throughout, earning a wide unanimous decision — including a 120-107 scorecard from judge David Sunderland.
The victory opens the door to several high-profile options for ‘King Ry’, from a rematch with Devin Haney to settling unfinished business with Rolando Romero or even a showdown with Conor Benn. But it was his post-fight callout that grabbed headlines, as Garcia named reigning WBC super-lightweight champion Shakur Stevenson as a potential next opponent.
Davis Applauds — But Issues a Warning
Speaking to Fight Hub TV, former WBO lightweight champion Keyshawn Davis praised Garcia’s performance.
“I think that it was an amazing performance, so shoutout to Ryan, you a world champ,” Davis said.
However, when asked what should come next, Davis didn’t hesitate. While he welcomed the idea of Garcia facing Stevenson — a close friend of his — he made it clear where he thinks that fight would lead.
“I think that he fights Shakur Stevenson [next] and I think that he gets his a** whooped.”
Catchweight Complications Ahead?
Shakur Stevenson, who recently enhanced his pound-for-pound credentials with a win over Teofimo Lopez, has publicly expressed interest in the fight. The former featherweight champion has even said he would forgo a rehydration clause.
Still, Stevenson has made one key demand: he wants the bout to take place at a 144lb catchweight rather than the full welterweight limit of 147lbs. Whether Garcia agrees could determine if one of boxing’s most intriguing matchups becomes reality.
