Islam Makhachev now dominates the UFC welterweight division after completing his two-division journey in 2025. He captured the 170-pound title at UFC 322 and successfully defended his lightweight crown. In the main event, Makhachev controlled Jack Della Maddalena for five rounds, demonstrating unmatched grappling and striking. Fans now wonder which contender can challenge the champion next.
Undefeated contender faces unexpected setback
Makhachev has no shortage of potential opponents, but one rising star will not cross his path. Rinat Fakhretdinov, another Russian fighter, recently faced disappointment after the UFC chose not to offer him a new contract. The decision surprised fans, as Fakhretdinov remained unbeaten across seven UFC fights. His professional record stands at 24-1-1, including a 23-fight winning streak.
Fakhretdinov ended UFC Paris with a 54-second knockout of Andreas Gustafsson last September. Despite the victory, UFC officials declined to re-sign him, sparking debate among MMA fans and insiders.
Makhachev explains why Fakhretdinov struggled
In an interview with Ushatayka, Makhachev gave a blunt assessment of his countryman’s situation. He said UFC values fighters who can sell fights and attract attention, not only those who win quietly. “Rinat would just go out there and win. The UFC doesn’t need guys who just beat everyone and stay quiet,” Makhachev explained.
He added that fighters must learn English, market themselves, and engage fans. “They love the show. You need to learn how to put on a show,” Makhachev said, emphasizing the business side of MMA beyond skill inside the Octagon.
Fakhretdinov looks ahead with new opportunities
Fakhretdinov quickly responded, clarifying he had not been cut from his contract. He expressed optimism and said he had already received new offers outside the UFC. “Nothing terrible happened and offers are pouring in with a very different pay,” he told fans.
He reflected proudly on his UFC career and hinted at unfinished business. “We fought with dignity there. Believe me, we have not said everything there,” he said. He suggested his presence in the UFC may have challenged some people behind the scenes.
