Fighter Seeks Redemption After Controversial Debut
Brazilian bantamweight Igor Severino is back in the spotlight as he prepares to fight for the vacant OKTAGON MMA title in Cologne, Germany. Severino’s name became notorious in March 2024 when he was disqualified during his UFC debut for biting opponent André Lima, an act that led to his immediate release from the promotion. Despite the controversy, Severino has since rebuilt his career in Europe and says he has learned from the incident that nearly ended his rise in mixed martial arts.
Confidence in Dana White’s Forgiveness
Severino believes a return to the UFC remains possible, saying that company president Dana White “has forgiven worse things before.” Although White swiftly terminated his contract after the biting incident, Severino insists he bears no resentment and hopes strong performances outside the UFC will earn him another chance. The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Severino for nine months and fined him $2,000, but the fighter now says he’s focused on proving his professionalism.
Title Fight Offers Path Back to the Top
Severino enters his OKTAGON MMA title bout with a 9–1 professional record, determined to show that his skills, not his past, define his future. While he missed weight for the championship fight and is ineligible to win the belt, Severino views the matchup as a crucial opportunity to demonstrate growth. “The bite is something I’ll carry with me for the rest of my life,” he said, “so I’ll try to use that to my advantage.”
