Former boxing champion George Groves shared his candid opinions on Jake Paul, Netflix’s boxing documentaries, and the BBC’s revival of the sport.
Groves Says Jake Paul Copies Moves
In a recent interview with Poker Strategy, Groves accused Jake Paul of borrowing heavily from other fighters’ styles.
He reflected on observing Paul during interactions with Gervonta Davis. Groves said,
“I like the clips where Gervonta Davis is standing there, and then Jake Paul’s doing the MMA stuff. Everything about him, he’s just seen on TV or somewhere else. It’s all stolen!”
Groves argued that Paul lacks originality and mainly imitates moves he has seen before.
Netflix Boxing Documentary Draws Scrutiny
Groves also discussed Netflix’s “The Greatest Showmen,” which focuses on Matchroom Boxing and the Hearns family.
“I came in halfway through the third episode. I like the title because Eddie and Barry are showmen. But if you watch the movie with Hugh Jackman, it’s a bit of a con. It’s quite deceptive.”
He highlighted moments that seemed dramatized. Groves referenced Conor Benn, who calls while Eddie and Frank Smith are golfing, joking about Benn’s Versace dressing gown and questioning the authenticity of his claims.
BBC’s Boxing Return Excites Groves
Groves expressed enthusiasm for boxing returning to the BBC. He said the exposure can help develop new talent in the sport.
“This is awesome. I can’t believe that it’s on BBC 2, which I think is great. I don’t know the setup, but it’s a good fight and it’s on terrestrial. I’m very excited.”
He praised promoter Ben Shalom and his stable of fighters, highlighting their potential to become future stars. Groves hopes the BBC can balance costs while showcasing rising talent.
