Dana White Calls Out Reporter for Embarrassing Mistake at UFC Press Conference

Dana White has always faced scrutiny for his decisions as UFC president. Fans and analysts often question which fighters he signs, which contracts he ends, and what changes he should implement. Even respected voices in the sport, like Joe Rogan, have openly debated some of White’s choices over the years.

In 2026, the criticism extends beyond MMA. Boxing promoters such as Eddie Hearn have publicly analyzed White’s plans for the long-awaited launch of Zuffa Boxing, highlighting the same intense attention his moves attract in MMA.

The Press Conference Mistake That Became Legendary

A decade ago, White turned the spotlight on a reporter who made a memorable blunder. On January 2, 2016, Robbie Lawler defeated Carlos Condit at UFC 195, defending his welterweight title in a fight many called the year’s best.

At the post-fight press conference, White announced that the main event fighters would arrive shortly. He fielded questions from the media while waiting. One reporter, however, jumped the gun and confused Albert Tumenov, who had just beaten Lorenz Larkin on the undercard, with Lawler.

The reporter asked a question aimed at the champion, only to realize his error after an awkward pause. White seized the moment immediately, laughing and pointing out the mix-up. “Oh, you thought that was Robbie Lawler?” he said. “You cover this sport? You thought that was Robbie Lawler?” He then joked that Tumenov could pass the question along to Lawler. After breaking the long silence, Ariel Helwani took the mic to continue the session.

A Reporter Reflects on the Blunder

The journalist behind the mistake, Case Keefer, wrote about it days later for the Las Vegas Sun. In his article, Keefer described the error as a “media blooper” and explained how he panicked mid-question.

Keefer admitted he had failed to double-check who was on stage before speaking. “There’s a second or two of awkward near-silence in the video,” he wrote, “but inside my head, it felt as loud as Condit’s signature Rage Against The Machine-charged arena entrance.” He compared his reaction to Lawler’s in-ring resilience, joking that he did not handle the moment with the same composure after an unexpected strike.

The incident remains a classic moment in UFC media history. It shows how White, known for his direct and confrontational style, can flip the script and put a reporter on the spot, turning an embarrassing error into an unforgettable press conference moment.
