Conor McGregor announced he will no longer run for the Irish presidency. Over recent years, the former two-division UFC champion spoke openly about Irish politics, often criticizing government policies, especially regarding immigration.
His political profile rose sharply after he claimed authorities made him a “scapegoat” for the 2023 Dublin riots. McGregor accused the government of shifting blame from a series of knife attacks linked to immigrants, incidents that sparked nationwide anti-immigration protests.
The 37-year-old fighter had hinted at a presidential bid for years. Earlier this month, he officially declared his intent to run for Ireland’s head of state in 2025. In a video outside Dublin’s government buildings, McGregor emphasized his nationalist and anti-immigration policies and detailed the reforms he would pursue if elected.
Conor McGregor Confirms He Will Exit 2025 Presidential Race
McGregor was scheduled to address county councils on Monday, as candidates need nominations from either 20 Oireachtas members or four local authorities. He had not received support from any Oireachtas members or councils. On Sunday, he announced his withdrawal in a detailed social media statement.
“After careful reflection and discussions with my family, I am withdrawing my candidacy,” McGregor wrote on X. “This decision was difficult, but it is the right one for now.”
He claimed the electoral system favors establishment-backed candidates. Despite stepping away from the race, McGregor promised to continue advocating for the Irish people and hinted at a possible future return to politics.
“Although I will not contest this election, my commitment to Ireland continues. I will use my international platform to promote Irish interests abroad, strengthen economic opportunities, and demand transparency and accountability in public life. This will not be my last election. You will see me campaigning again, defending your rights, and representing Ireland’s best interests.”
McGregor Eyes UFC Comeback After Political Detour
McGregor has not competed since breaking his leg during his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier at UFC 264 in July 2021. He planned a comeback at UFC 303 in June 2024 against Michael Chandler but withdrew due to a toe injury weeks before the event.
He now confirmed his determination to return at a UFC event tentatively scheduled on the White House lawn in June 2026. McGregor also stated he rejoined the UFC’s drug testing pool, signaling full commitment to his fighting career.
