Big Fight, Big History
Boxing fans are gearing up for a long-awaited rematch between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao on September 19 at the Sphere in Las Vegas, streamed live on Netflix. Their first fight in 2015 ended with Mayweather securing a dominant points victory and taking the WBC, WBO, and WBA welterweight titles. Since then, both legends have mostly stayed active through exhibitions, with Mayweather claiming wins over Andre Berto and Conor McGregor, and Pacquiao drawing with Mario Barrios in his professional return after nearly four years out.
Khan Sees Lifestyle as the Key Factor
Former world champion Amir Khan believes Pacquiao’s disciplined lifestyle gives him the advantage. Speaking on Facebook, Khan noted that Pacquiao’s consistent training and avoidance of distractions like partying and drinking set him apart from Mayweather. “I like Manny Pacquiao in the second one, because I think Mayweather’s slowing down a little bit. Age catches up on you, and I think with Manny always looking in good shape… I’ve got Manny Pacquiao winning that fight,” Khan said. He highlighted the contrasting ways the fighters live their lives as a deciding factor.
Experience vs. Ring Rust
While Mayweather is renowned for his work ethic and skill, his limited professional fights since 2017 could impact his performance. Some observers also argue that his exhibition-style bouts, including the stoppage over McGregor, don’t fully test him in a professional context. Khan, however, acknowledges that Mayweather’s experience makes him a dangerous opponent, adding a note of caution: “But who knows? Mayweather always ends up pulling it off. But I feel that Manny Pacquiao [is] the favourite.”
