Alexander Gustafsson could soon step back into the spotlight, but not inside the MMA cage. The Swedish fighter, long regarded as one of the best light heavyweights without a championship belt, built a strong reputation with elite battles before retiring in 2022.
According to a recent report from the Swedish outlet Frontkick.online, the man known as “The Mauler” is preparing for a new chapter in combat sports. He is reportedly deep in negotiations to make his professional boxing debut under the Misfits banner. Sources suggest that Gustafsson could face another former UFC competitor if the deal goes through as expected.
Gustafsson’s last appearances in the UFC
Gustafsson seemed to walk away from competition after a fourth-round submission defeat to Anthony Smith at UFC Stockholm in June 2019. Yet in 2020, he decided to return. The Swede announced his comeback and made his heavyweight debut against former champion Fabrício Werdum at UFC Fight Island 3 in July. The return ended quickly as he suffered a first-round submission defeat.
The 38-year-old stayed away for two more years before stepping back into the Octagon in July 2022. He moved down again to light heavyweight and faced Nikita Krylov at UFC London. The comeback ended in disappointment as he suffered a first-round knockout defeat.
Release and a failed new start
In December 2024, the UFC released the former Hall of Fame inductee from his contract. Soon after, “The Mauler” signed with the newly created Global Fight League. The promotion promised big things but collapsed before staging a single fight due to financial issues.
Gustafsson’s career record and legacy
Gustafsson leaves behind an MMA record of 18 wins and 8 losses. Inside the UFC, he scored 10 victories against 8 defeats. His career highlights include strong wins over Glover Teixeira, Jimi Manuwa, and Matt Hamill. Despite never holding a championship, his name remains tied to unforgettable battles and his ability to push the best in the sport.
