Laura Woods opens up about Olympic controversy

Laura Woods expressed fears of backlash after voicing her opinion on the 2024 Olympic gender dispute. The debate focused on Algerian boxer Imane Khelif’s participation and gold medal win in the women’s welterweight division. Woods, a TNT Sports presenter, said speaking publicly made her worry about being “cancelled” for questioning the situation. She criticized the disproportionate sympathy shown to Khelif versus the biological women competing against her.

The controversy began after Khelif and China’s Lin Yu-ting faced disqualification from the World Championships by the International Boxing Association (IBA) a year earlier. The IBA, backed by Russia, claimed blood tests proved Khelif could not compete against women. However, the organization provided no documented evidence. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) rejected the tests as unreliable and cleared both athletes to compete at the Paris Games.

Khelif faces scrutiny and public criticism

Woods praised a Telegraph article on social media, which argued the IOC’s decision risked fairness for biological women. She later told the newspaper that she felt “angry” and “gaslighted” for attempting to discuss the issue openly. Woods said witnessing the injustice frustrated her, noting the lack of empathy for women competing against Khelif. She added that even raising questions about the situation publicly felt like grounds for cancellation.

Khelif defeated Yang Liu in last year’s final and plans to compete at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. She faced false claims from former President Donald Trump, who implied she was born male. Khelif denied the claims, stating in an ITV Sport interview that transgender policies in the U.S. do not concern her. She said the scrutiny affected her mental and emotional health but credited her specialist medical team for keeping her grounded.

Olympic battles spark debate on fairness

Khelif’s second-round victory over Italy’s Angela Carini triggered widespread backlash. She knocked out Carini in only 46 seconds. Eyewitnesses reported Carini exclaimed, “It’s not fair,” after receiving the punch. The incident reignited discussions about fairness in women’s sports and amplified the media and public attention surrounding Khelif. Investigations and public debates on these issues continue as athletes, commentators, and officials weigh in.
