Joey Essex Faces Potential Boxing Controversy

Joey Essex’s boxing debut faces uncertainty after his opponent announced plans to appeal the result.

The 35-year-old TV personality fought Portuguese influencer Numeiro, real name Joao Barbosa, on August 30 in Manchester.

Essex overcame two standing counts in the fourth and final rounds and earned a points victory.

    Opponent Challenges Result

Barbosa revealed to IFL TV that he plans to appeal the decision, citing feedback from coaches and referees.

He said, “It was really unfair. Every professional I spoke to questioned Essex winning.”

Barbosa added that he dedicated immense time and effort to the fight, making the loss feel unjust.

He claimed refereeing errors influenced the outcome and decided with his team to pursue an appeal.

    Criticism and Possible Rematch

Barbosa criticized Essex, saying he saw “fear” and “weakness” and questioned Essex’s technical ability.

He suggested a rematch outside the UK but said he prioritizes a fair result from the first fight.

    Essex’s Boxing Heritage

Essex has a strong family boxing background. His uncle, Tony Sims, coached Conor Benn and formerly Anthony Joshua.

His father, Donny, boxed as an amateur, while his grandfather competed in the navy.

His great-grandfather served as a boxing judge at the 1948 Olympic Games in England.

Demi Sims, Tony’s daughter, also won her debut at Misfits 22, defeating Nadeshi Hopkins on points.
